Where I really am on the Web

You will rarely find a new posting here on LiveJournal (this is the first one in more than a year and a half). The place to find me is a my actual personal Web site -- jimsjournal -- which passed its 13th anniversary a few days ago.

http://www.jimsjournal.com

On line since September 26, 1996

In keeping with the idea that, even if I don't post actual entries here (with stuff like actual content), I could at least post pointers to entries to be found on jimsjournal.

So, there's a new entry up at jimsjournal...
It's about a sleepy cat, high blood pressure, a walk on a beach, and taking another night course at RISD
The middle of September -- 09/15/07
and also one from last week...
That one was mostly about art on display at a local history museum, although I also mention running and doing some yard work
September weekend -- 09/09/07
politics on youtube

Most of the political advertising I've seen here in Rhode Island has either been very air-headedly empty (vote for me because I have a family and I know how to shake hands with old people) or have been nasty mud-slinging hate ads (no actual content, just attack, attack, attack).

Some places have had more substantive (although quite pointed and hard-hitting) political ads. This one is against Representative Jim Walsh, who represents New York State's 25th Congressional District (which, I believe, the Syracuse area). He apparently voted against federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. It is hard-hitting but quite clear: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4tFk9WLjwM&eurl=

(I tend to support the point of view expressed in that ad -- but I'm a bit torn -- on his Web page Rep. Walsh has a section called "Jim's Journal" -- heh! How can I be against a guy like that? *grin* Ah, well, not my district nor state, so it's a moot point.)

Architectural Gems -- a new jimsjournal entry

There's a new entry up at www.jimsjournal.com
"Architectural Gems"
http://www.jimsjournal.com/jj06/083106.html

Pictures and brief descriptions of eight houses of historic interest in South Kingstown, RI. with a slight seasoning of historical comment -- Druidsdream, Fairlawn, Dunmere Gatehouse, Stone Lea, the Old Perryville Baptist Church, the Red House, the Oliver Watson House, and the General Isaac Peace Rodman House.

I left out vast amounts of stuff...

For example, I noted that Perryville is named for the Perry family, which included Oliver Hazard Perry, naval hero in War of 1812 -- but I didn't mention his battle report from his naval battle on Lake Erie which became famous ("We have met the enemy and they are ours") nor the name of his ship (The Lawrence, named for his friend James Lawrence who died in that war) -- Perry's battle flag bore Lawrence's famous saying "Don't give up the ship." (of course at the time Lawrence said that his ship was on fire and taking on water and he himself was mortally wounded). Perry's ship -- the Lawrence -- was itself in danger of sinking and his crew had suffered eighty percent casualties (killed and wounded) and Perry took his battle flag into a rowboat and crossed half a mile through fierce gunfire to The Niagara and proceeded to defeat the British. He went back to the Lawrence to take the British surrender because he wanted them to see the price his men had paid. (I assume you can figure out why I am interested in Captain James Lawrence -- and, no, I no knowledge of any relationship; Lawrence is a fairly common name.)

There's a marvelous online journal -- Waiter Rant -- that I enjoy reading. The author is a waiter in a New York City restaurant he calls "The Bistro." He posts stories about the restaurant, its customers, its employees, and his thoughts about these little vignettes.

http://www.waiterrant.net/

Give it a try; I think you's find it interesting.
